Mary Ludwig Hayes
In June of 1778, Mary Ludwig Hayes helped in the Battle of Monmouth in New Jersey, even loading the cannon. She also delivered water to the soldiers during hot weather conditions and "found time to use a gun".
She and other unknown water-bearers were nicknamed "Molly Pitcher."
(McDowell, 1967)
